Visual Teaching Philosophies: Art’s Role in (Teacher) Education

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This practitioner dissertation research provides a counter-narrative to the current educational and political discourse of increased standardization and accountability measures. In this research, I examine my own teaching practice implementing an arts-integrated pedagogy into an early pre-service teacher preparation program, designed for high school seniors interested in education careers. This (work-in-progress) research seeks to understand the ways early pre-service teachers engage in the arts as a critical method of inquiry into their emerging teaching philosophies and the ways their engagement informs their teacherly identities and theories of practice. A close examination of selected student work, including one student’s visual teaching philosophy, a mixed media collaged artwork, will demonstrate how arts experiences enable students to develop a critically conscious teaching practice.
