Teacher motivation is an important yet understudied topic in teacher education and professional development (PD). Few studies measure teachers’ motivation for PD and examine how this motivation is distributed across different groups of teachers and schools. This national study includes 9,329 teachers from 2,512 schools participating in 291 PD programs. Exploratory factor analysis suggests two constructs representing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Motivation measures are related to teacher and school characteristics, teacher’s mathematical knowledge, and their learning in the context of PD.
