The purpose of this paper is to introduce and discuss a conceptual model for cultivating democratic professional practices in education to advance school improvement. While Armstrong (2006) proposed democratic professional practices in pre-service teacher education and social work, this model considers cultivating democratic professional practices in teaching and leading throughout P-20 education. Fostering democratic practices in all areas of education may better prepare school leaders to meet the persistent challenge of increasing student achievement while engaging teachers and students in meaningful teaching and learning experiences. This inquiry includes a brief review of literature and framework for cultivating democratic practices in both P-12 education and higher education. Additional discourses and ideas for advancing democratic leadership practices for school improvement are encouraged.
