Despite the increasingly acknowledged importance of teachers’ data use to improve teaching and learning, empirical research on its status is thin and in regard to the best ways to develop teachers’ capacity is even thinner. This study synthesizes research on teachers and principals’ data use conducted in the last 10 years and examines the nature, impacts, and shapers of teachers’ use of student data to inform instruction and improve teaching and learning. Questions unexplored about data use by current research will be also identified. This review provides a much-needed guide to school personnel and policy makers who want to make evidence-based decisions to improve student learning and to improve teacher enthusiasm and effectiveness in data use.
