An Experimental Study of the Arts Achieve Project: Impacting Student Success in the Arts

Mon, April 7, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The Arts Achieve project involves a partnership between the NYCDOE and five arts organizations. The project seeks to increase student arts achievement by providing support to art teachers on the use of balanced assessment and the integration of technology in instruction and assessment. The study employs an experimental design, whereby schools were stratified into one of four art disciplines (dance, music, theater, visual arts) and school level (elementary, middle, high) and then randomly assigned into treatment or control conditions. Year 1 results indicate that students in the treatment schools made greater gains in their arts achievement, as compared to students in the control schools. Years 1 and 2 implementation and impact results, as well as lessons learned, will be discussed.
