The purpose of this proposal is to design and validate an instrument that characterizes the pedagogical approaches taken in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and to use that instrument to distinguish among MOOCs and to explore the efficacy of differing approaches. The AMP study will identify course designs that effectively and efficiently deliver instruction that results in the higher retention rate and develop a model based on the identification of these courses. As more courses are evaluated and retention rates obtained, the analysis will become complete and the AMP team can begin the process of determining which MOOC designs are most effective and if there are major differences in design between MOOCs in the STEM disciplines and those in other areas.
