This collaborative self-study of an elementary general music methods course was conducted by its co-instructors: a university professor and an elementary music teacher. The collaborative inquiry involved: (1) two personal self-studies we each undertook to examine our teaching practices, and (2) our shared study of the course involving purposeful, meaningful co-researcher interaction. The purpose of the professor’s self-study was to identify elements of the methods course that seemed to yield movement toward a deeper reflective practice by undergraduates. The purpose of the music teacher’s self-study was to examine how her interactions with preservice teachers reflected her developing teaching practice. We will present findings for both self-studies and the collaborative inquiry regarding the course outcomes and our development as teacher educators.
