Implementation of Common Core State Standards and Coaching Factors

Abstract

Given the national need to prepare teachers for Common Core State Standards implementation, researchers conducted a study of one school district’s use of coaches as primary implementers. Using Activity Theory as a theoretical framework, researchers explored the factors that influence coaching implementation. These factors include but are not limited to: leadership, curriculum and resources, and commitment to the initiative. Researchers found that coaches’ work was affected by multiple factors within a larger contextual framework. The coaching objective, to prepare teachers to implement the CCSS, could not be isolated from other significant elements.
