The purpose of this study is to provide a national snapshot of current secondary mathematics teacher education programs in the United States, particularly as pertains to preparation for teaching algebra. Our study found that there are a variety of secondary teacher education programs that prepare pre-service teachers. Despite the variation in the licensure paths that teacher education programs provide to pre-service teachers, there is a consistent trend among institutions in which programs provide a fair amount of the requisite mathematics content knowledge. However, they seem to be not providing sufficient opportunities to learn how to teach mathematics.
