Abstract

For decades, research has focused on the African American learner in PreK-12 urban, academic environments. Such research has frequently provided in-depth details on the experiences of African American students in these kinds of educational settings, however, very little, if any, of this research has provided answers to guide the direction of parents, educational professionals (e.g., teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, and administrators) and other stakeholders (e.g., policy makers, and community members) in increasing academic achievement for African American learners in PreK-12 urban educational settings. As a result, this paper seeks to present research that focuses on information that will provide insights to these groups with a focus on race, class and gender of the learner.
