Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a 55 item resiliency/social emotional learning instrument that was validated using a sample of 657 students in grades 3-5 from three school districts. Using principal factors analysis, a seven scale instrument was established (academic self-efficacy, academic motivation, importance of school, academic stress, psychological/emotional well-being, social connections with teachers, and access to a caring adult. Six scales were found to possess strong internal consistency (>.83) and one adequate internal consistency (.70). Stepwise regression analyses indicated that academic stress combined with importance of school and access to a caring adult to account for 30% in reading scores and combined with access to a caring adult to account for 20% of the variance in math scores.
