This qualitative study examines how ninth grade students use and apply strategies as they read and approach texts in different genres. Interviews and think aloud protocols were administered to four focal students in order to investigate how these students thought about and used strategies as they read assigned texts in three different genres: the literary narrative, the history text, and the persuasive article. The study includes cognitive and socio-cultural perspectives and applies genre theory to the literature on reading strategies and the reading process. Findings from the study indicate that students’ understandings of what a genre entails influence the ways in which they employ strategies and attend to reading a text.
