Dispositions and Culturally Responsive Teaching in Urban Teacher Preparation

Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 203A

Abstract

This study examines four orientations in order to identify shared dispositions that extend across the phases of teacher preparation. We asked: Can teacher dispositions be pedagogically specific? To explore this question of the relation between pedagogy and dispositions, we selected one specific pedagogical orientation, culturally relevant pedagogy/teaching (CRP/T) (hereafter referred to as CRP) that has historically held specific educational values associated with it and used to facilitate empowering educators. The following questions guided our analysis of data:
1. What pedagogical dispositions are connected to CRP?
2. Are the same teacher dispositions used to describe CRP match those espoused as general teacher dispositions?
