Building Common Assessments Within Professional Learning Communities: A Comparison of Item Development Methods, Student Performance, and Test Characteristics

Abstract

One common form of classroom assessment is the teacher-made test, but the usefulness of the feedback to teachers and students depends on the quality of these assessments. Teachers have historically received little training in assessment and assessment literacy. The goal of this research is to explore the effects of collaborative assessment development through a PLC and field testing of common assessments on test quality and student performance in an effort to identify best practices in common assessment development. This study helps inform the common assessment development process. The results of the study will provide evidence as to the efficacy of teacher collaboration and field testing during assessment development on the quality of items and student performance on a common assessment.
