A Case Study of Implementing Technology-Enhanced Cases in a Social Studies Methods Course

Abstract

A case study was conducted in a social studies methods course for two consecutive semesters to investigate the use of technology-enhanced cases as a means to support pre-service teachers’ understanding of teaching. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data on the perceptions and experiences of pre-service teachers. Findings indicate that there were differences between the first and second semester implementations regarding how pre-service teachers use information presented in the cases to discuss instructional strategies and classroom management. This may be attributed to the organization of lessons, the level of scaffolding, and the dynamics of different cohorts. This study provides insights into the use of technology-enhanced cases in teacher education programs to supplement field experiences and inform future course design.
