The Effectiveness of Teaching the Circulatory System Through History of Science

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the relative effectiveness of HOS integrated and curriculum-oriented instruction on grade six students’ understanding of circulatory system. Accordingly two classes were assigned to treatment group and two were assigned to comparison group randomly. Data was collected three times (pre, post and follow-up) through circulatory system achievement test. The result showed that there was no significant difference between groups right after the implementation. However follow-up results showed that HOS leads to better retention of science content knowledge. This result suggested that evaluating the effectiveness of HOS instruction only with posttest may be deceptive therefore follow-up test may be required to evaluate the effectiveness of HOS. The implications for science educators, researchers, and curriculum developers were discussed.
