Workplace Communications and Language Development for Immigrant and/or Ethnic Workers

Abstract

In our presentation we will illustrate two projects Deutsch am Arbeitsplatz /German at the workplace (DaA1 and 2) carried out by a study group of researchers and practitioners funded by the Volkswagen foundation. The research project“ (DaA1) responded to the urgent need to provide empirically based support for practitioners, using instruments of company ethnography and linguistic analysis. The study group has been investigating formal and informal communications in companies and branches with a high percentage of immigrant workers in order to identify key features of workplace communications and thus underpin governmental programs and provision with empirical data.
