Technology and Nature: The Successes and Difficulties in Designing an “E-Trail Guide” for an Informal, Outdoor Educational Space

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 124

Abstract

This project aimed to implement an iPad-based e-trailguide specific to a nature trail at an environmental education center. The goal of this e-trailguide was to facilitate exploration and reflection upon the local plant and animal diversity. Pilot data was gathered with summer campers (n = 70) between 10 and 12 years old. Video-based methodologies captured the campers’ use of the e-trailguides on the nature trail in order to understand the nuanced learning patterns that occurred in situ. Findings revealed that interactive features of the e-trailguide allowed for meaningful reflection while immersed in nature. However, creating a mobile learning experience that minimizes the “heads down phenomena” (Hsi, 2002; Lyons, 2009) is inherently difficult when technology is introduced into an outdoors setting.
