Uncovering Hidden Patterns: Temporal Analysis of Productive and Improvable Knowledge-Building Discourse

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Temporality matters, as learning is a dynamic, interactive process that evolves over time. This study goes beyond the commonly applied "coding-and-counting" analysis technique and attends to the temporal aspect of collaborative knowledge building. In particular, we applied Lag-sequential Analysis to uncover temporal patterns that distinguish between "productive" and "improvable" lines of inquiry in knowledge-building discourse. Results indicated that productive discourse involved more transitions among questioning, theorizing, obtaining evidence, and working with evidence, while responding to questioning and theorizing by merely providing opinions is not sufficient to achieve knowledge progress. This study highlights the importance of investigating temporality in collaborative learning and calls for attention to developing and testing temporal methods in research on collaborative learning.
