Principal as Instructional Learner

Abstract

This paper examines principals’ efforts to become instructional learners of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and presents the hypothesis that in order for a principal to become an instructional leader of the CCSS, a principal must first become an instructional learner of the CCSS. To fulfill the role of an instructional leader, a principal must first be a learner of the content and instructional shifts of the CCSS. This study investigates the knowledge about the CCSS that principals identify that they need to experience and the learning structures that will facilitate their knowledge development. This study has implications for professional learning opportunities for practicing principals and leadership preparation programs.
