This study reports the implementation and the first effects of a long-term second language training for primary-school pupils with migration background. The training is based on current second language acquisition theory and research and provides structured input in authentic communication settings. A mixed-method longitudinal design was used to address two research questions: How can a theory-based language training put into practice successfully? What are the effects of the language training?
The results suggest that the examined training can be an appropriate measure to foster the second language acquisition effectively, if implemented as conceptualized. Concluding, the findings confirm how important it is to assess implementation fidelity, especially the organizational component, in studies investigating program effectiveness.
