Amplifying the Post in Postintentional Phenomenology

Abstract

Post-intentional phenomenology draws on the post-structural commitment to knowledge being partial and ever-changing. Whereas early phenomenology is interested in the “essence” of phenomena (Husserl, 1900/1970), post-intentional phenomenology is more interested in chasing the lines of flight (Deleuze & Guatarri, 1987) phenomena can/might take. In this theoretical paper, we amplify the post in post-intentional phenomenology in order to demonstrate some of the unique possibilities this methodology might afford qualitative researchers interested in putting seemingly incommensurate philosophies, theories, and methodologies in dialogue with one another (such as the way Ahmed [2006] worked with queer theory and phenomenology)--perhaps even going as far as attempting to “bring something incomprehensible into the world” (Delueze & Guattari, 1987, p. 378) of qualitative research.
