This research describes the use of self-study, particularly the role of supportive critical friends, to explore distance education for teachers and to develop online teaching skills and dispositions for peer interaction. The projects described encompass synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid, and fully online learning models in three different disciplines (literacy, mathematics and special education) and in a cross-disciplinary capstone teacher research course. We explore decisions made by the teacher educators in context. The project included two levels of critical friends’ groups: a university-wide group of educators employing e-learning strategies and a small group of faculty engaged in teacher education courses.
