Teacher Professional Development in the current era of increasing global demands and decreasing local resources requires inservice teachers take charge of their own development as well as that of their communities. This case study of a university-based teacher professional development program on teaching about East Asia indicates an important role to be played by online communities of practice rooted in participatory media in transforming high school classroom teachers into resources, school and district leaders, and ambassadors connecting students, staff, and communities across cultural divides. The results are broadly applicable to other content areas and education levels.
