The purpose of the research is to introduce Propensity Score Matching (PSM) as a useful methodology for creating a stronger research design in many higher education assessment and evaluation studies. Although PSM can be utilized in any number of ways, we will focus specifically on the application of PSM as it pertains to analyzing comparative group data. We will demonstrate this methodology by comparing examination scores between main campus and remote-site medical students. Further, we will discuss the implications of PSM for assessment professionals and educational researchers that are looking for innovative ways to improve the rigor of assessments that involve comparison groups.
