This article presents key findings of a study of the lived experiences of black male college students attending a predominantly white private institution in the Northeast. Specifically the study sought to understand the ways in which black males attending this PWI make use of institutional support structures as part of a strategy for persisting in higher education. In-depth interviews with thirty students provided rich narratives that highlight the perceptions and experiences of black male students living lives within the intersection of race and gender. The analysis is informed by critical race theory, social support theory and feminist perspectives of patriarchal masculinity.
