Social Studies Teachers’ Opinions and Experiences With LGBT-Inclusive Curricula

Abstract

When issues and themes related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) individuals are discussed in academic settings, school climates (including feelings of safety, school attendance, and student performance) improve. This study seeks to understand the perspectives of current secondary Social Studies teachers on the integration of LGBT themes, issues, and movements within their classrooms. Findings were surprising, showing that many of the participants interviewed already use practice an LGBT curricula in spite of strict district policies not allowing it.
