This paper examines the social context of religious orthodoxy in the United States and how fundamentalist culture influences public school policy. The primary aims of this paper are to clearly define and trace the origins of the term “fundamentalist,” to describe the influence of fundamentalist views on the Religious Right, and to describe the historical relationship between the Religious Right and American public schools.
