Formative assessment utilizing audience response systems is increasingly common. Research involving these systems concerns the delivery of multiple choice questions and the pedagogical and technological challenges involved. This paper advances the idea that there has to be a better, or at the very least, more interactive method than multiple choice to engage students in class wide activities, encourage peer instruction, and collect summative information about their overall level of understanding. We present a framework for audience response systems that is capable of modeling current implementations, which is also flexible enough to define and influence new, alternate forms of response systems. We describe a new implementation that takes advantage of spatial arrangements to capture student input to demonstrate the framework’s power.
