The purpose of this study was to explore eighth graders science attitudes in a group of at-risk students. We use a mixed methods sequential explanatory design. We first describe students’ value and enjoyment of science using items from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and compare our sample’s responses to the U.S. national PISA sample responses. Our sample was most similar to the PISA sample on general value of science items. Next, we use qualitative data from students’ interviews to explore students’ experiences in science class and their self-systems processes. Students reported a range of science experiences and important themes emerged. Among these were perceived autonomy, relationships with teacher, and competence. Implications for educators are discussed.
