“Because My Time Is Limited”: Accountability Reform and Teachers’ Changing Roles

Abstract

This paper examines the changing roles of teachers under accountability-based reforms. Data were collected during a two-year qualitative study of public school teachers in two urban elementary schools. Drawing on this data, I articulate how the intensification and increase in externally mandated instructional tasks changed teachers’ roles in ways that reduced their time and opportunities to attend to relationships with each other and with students.
