Using Classroom Observation to Explore the Effectiveness of a One-on-One Tutoring Program for Struggling Readers

Abstract

In order to address the reading achievement gap in Houston, United Way of Greater Houston established a 3rd grade reading initiative program—Reading Together. UWGH recruited and trained corporate volunteers to act as tutors for struggling students. The program focused on early grade reading to ensure that students were reading at or above grade-level by the end of third grade. Volunteer tutors worked at three elementary schools during the school day with children who had been identified by their teachers as “struggling readers.” Researchers conducted a 1-year evaluation of the program. The purpose of this paper is to describe: aspects of the treatment program that were most beneficial, the experiences of the volunteer tutors, and how tutoring makes a difference.
