The Sources of Common Core Knowledge in New York City Schools

Thu, April 3, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 115A

Abstract

In preparation for implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the New York City Department of Education provided significant guidance to schools on expected transitions to CCSS implementation. As instructional staff in schools work through this transition, they are expected to access resources within and around their school environment. This research focuses on the loci of CCSS expertise and their place within a school’s communications networks. Researchers used a mixed methods approach to learn about the sources of knowledge instructional staff access to learn about the CCSS, and the strategies for sharing CCSS expertise within schools. By using a social network analysis, coupled with interviews, researchers revealed different ways school communication structures function as a means of disseminating CCSS knowledge.
