Collaborative Learning With Wikis: A Critical Analysis of Research in Higher Education

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This research reviewed 66 empirical studies that used wikis to facilitate collaborative knowledge construction in the context of higher education. We analyzed each study for the learning topic, sample size, the length of the Wiki learning task, the type of the Wiki task, and the scaffolding provided. Through this critical review, we aim to synthesize the results of available research studies, and offer evidence- based suggestions for designing effective learning tasks that motivate and engage learners to participate and interact in collaborative learning supported by Wiki technology. We will also discuss the possible support and scaffolding for cognitive and motivational aspects to help learners achieve successful collaborative knowledge construction.
