Presenter 1 is an advanced doctoral student in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education program at Alpha University who studies marginalized student groups, including LGBTQ, community college, and adult learner students. He has researched both the impact of academic SM use on non-traditional students, and the professional role of SM for researchers and dissemination of scholarship.
Presenter 1 discusses how an emerging open access opportunity for scholarship falls within the context of social media, and both senior and emerging scholars and researchers can take advantage of social media in order to disseminate their research to their networks and beyond. While education research in the 21st century has seen a proliferation in scholarship in open access venues, there is no data available that indicate that traditional promotion and tenure systems have adapted to take digital scholarship into consideration of their faculty. Presenter 1 examines the notion that open access scholarship opportunities are not viewed as comparable to more traditional journals and in doing so will encourage dialogue from the audience on how higher education might reexamine its priorities for promotion.
