This study, as a part of a large meta-analysis research project funded by the National Science Founation, aims to examine the features and affordances of emerging technologies within the pedagogical framework of modeling-based instruction (MBI), a well-established instructional method in science education. By analyzing all empirical studies of MBI from 2000 to 2010, this study shared three major findings: 1) Technology is widely used in modeling-based science education, with computer-based software being the most commonly used technology. 2) The interactive features of technology are frequently used in the modeling process; but technology plays a less important role in facilitating collaboration and providing scaffolding. 3) Technology-supported MBI is an effective practice that improves student science learning.
