Academic Self-Concept of Academically Talented Students: What Can’t Go Up and Still Doesn’t Come Down

Abstract

The current study assessed changes in ASC associated with participating in a summer talent search program. Some results support the Big Fish Little Pond Effect model; participant ASCs were high initially and some significant decreases in domain-relevant ASCs were associated with program participation. However, censor corrected mean ASCs remained quite high (often above the absolute ceiling of the subscale). Such consistently high ASCs do not suggest talent search program participation should be cause of much concern to students, parents, or educators.
