Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore multimodal interaction analysis (MIA) as a methodological framework. As this is a newer methodology, researchers are just beginning to explore the possibilities of MIA and how to use these methods in educational research. This paper specifically shares new ways to explore educational research through studying multiple modes of communication. As all communication is multimodal, the methods for this paper focus on describing and analyzing multiple modes of communication (i.e., gaze, body positioning, proxemics, gesture, and speech). During the presentation, possibilities for multimodal transcriptions from video recordings as well as recording the spatial orientation of people and tools within a space will be discussed.
