The purpose of this project was to develop a short form of the Social Skills Improvement System – Teacher Rating Scales (SSIS-TRS), a measure of student behavior commonly used in both research and practice. Polytomous Item Response Theory was used to refine each subscale of the SSIS-TRS, reducing the total item count from 73 to 40 items. Subsequently, the evidence for reliability and validity of the scores from the short form were examined and compared with the reliability and validity of the scores from the SSIS-TRS. Results indicated that the short form exceeded typical standards for screening measures and that its scores had similar reliability and validity coefficients as the scores of the full-length SSIS-TRS.
