In this proposal, we focus on adolescents’ reading motivation, behavior, and achievement as students move across the transition from middle school to high school. Specifically, we examine the extent to which specific motivation variables related to expectancy and value predict achievement and behavior and the extent to which those variables change across the transition from middle to high school. Expectancy predicted achievement, whereas intrinsic and extrinsic value predicted behavior. Intrinsic value and reading behavior increased across the transition, whereas attainment value decreased across the transition.
