Redistribution or Recognition? Outcomes of an International Service-Learning Partnership From the Perspective of the Community

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perspective of the community organization representatives and residents about an international service-learning partnership between a College of Engineering and a rural municipality in Nicaragua. . The intended community outcomes described during interviews include: (1) project outcomes, such as access to clean drinking water, improved access to healthcare services, and the associated capacity-building work that accompanies these projects; and (2) provide a catalyst as support for the local partners. The community described three additional positive community outcomes related to: (1) trust; (2) sense of pride; and (3) awareness. The additional outcomes described by the community highlight the importance of recognition in addition to redistribution.
