Validation of the HOPE Scale for Use With Native American Students in Grades 6-12

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to validate the HOPE Scale (Peters & Gentry, 2010), an existing teacher rating instrument designed to identify gifted behaviors in elementary students, for use with Native American students in grades six through twelve. 1,095 completed HOPE Scales from 75 teachers working on five separate Native American reservations were collected and analyzed using EFA and CFA procedures. A two factor model provided the best fit after the deletion of one correlated item (CFI .968; TLI .958; SRMR .026; and RMSEA .103). Further analysis will be conducted comparing scales from Native American students with those of non-Native students before AERA 2014.
