Effects of a Pre-Kindergarten Math/Science Curriculum on Low-Income Children’s Knowledge of Mathematics: Lessons From Research

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

The National Science Education Standards (National Research Council, 1996) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards (2000) emphasized the importance of active learning. Educators recognize that early learning profoundly impacts later mathematical achievement (Clements, Copple, & Hyson, 2002; Clements, Sarama, & DiBiase, 2004). Unfortunately, a high percentage of children from low-income families lack math/science skills when they enter kindergarten (Bowman, Donovan, & Burns, 2001). Many have not been exposed to appropriate learning opportunities. Therefore, a critical step in closing the achievement gap is providing quality early math and science experiences for young children.
The Early Childhood Math and Science Pilot Program was launched to address the low level of math/science skills of Head Start children.
