Abstract

This paper presents results from the first year of a three-year i3 impact evaluation of the Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) Modeling Exemplary Literacy Instruction program. This program is designed to provide intensive professional development, coaching and resources to all teachers in a grade-level to improve teacher’s classroom environment and literacy instruction and student literacy achievement. Results from year one of this randomized control trial found that kindergarten treatment students achieved significantly higher than control students in their word-reading skills, equivalent to an effect size of 0.16. Results presented also show the program was implemented with high fidelity and there was a large contrast in the amount and type of coaching and professional development received between treatment and control teachers.
