This paper analyzes the need for ecopedagogy as an element of citizenship education which emerged as strong theme from a comparative education research study conducted in Argentina, Brazil and Appalachia region of the United States. Ecopedagogy, pluralistic in meaning, is defined by its essence of being critical, transformative environmental education towards bettering the planet within social and environmental (socio-environmental) justice models, as well as within anthropocentric and biocentric spheres. Environmental rights as an essential element of citizenship (in addition to civil, political, and social rights) rather than a tangent to another element emerged from the research with ecopedagogy as an essential element of citizenship education emerged as a powerful theme from the research.
