An Evaluation of State and Provincial Student Score Reports and Interpretive Guides

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review critically the reports of large-scale summative tests in the U.S. and Canada. Such reports serve as the primary channel through which to communicate valuable information that drives decisions that impact the individual examinee in a meaningful way. This review calls upon the most thorough and contemporary review framework for score reports. Preliminary analyses revealed score reports to fall short of standards for quality. Implications building a field of research around score reporting and leveraging communication models to maximize the functioning of score reports are discussed.
