Africa and the Fourth World: An Indigenous Critique of Frantz Fanon’s “On National Culture”

Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Since Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth, new paradigms have emerged in response to the failures and limitations of national liberation movements of the 1960s and 70s. One of these paradigms is the rise of critical Indigenous Studies on Turtle Island, the South Pacific, Latin America, and increasingly so, in Africa. Here, I re-explicate Fanon’s seminal text on anticolonialism in Africa to insert an Indigenous analysis that shifts his Third Word national liberation paradigm toward one of Fourth World decolonization. Amongst other questions this paper asks, how could we reinterpret Fanon’s work from the perspective of Indigenous Studies? How can we bring his text to life to adapt and respond to the rise of globalized colonial-modernity?
