Online Learning Readiness and Computer-Supported Collaborative Writing

Abstract

This study is an attempt to explore the relationships between learners’ online learning readiness (OLR) and computer-supported collaborative writing. In this study, learners worked together in groups on collaborative writing project with support of online chat rooms and wikis. The findings include descriptive statistics of learners’ OLR, correlations between each OLR dimensions, and correlations between OLR and computer-supported collaborative writing. It is found that higher self-directed learning and learner control might cause negative effects. Since OLR was developed for measuring self-paced individual online learning, it does not seem to be adequate predictor of learners’ performance in online collaboration. Educators should be aware that collaborative learning pedagogies may require learners a different set of skills and attributes for successful learning outcomes.
