Where academic engagement has been an important topic in higher education, the other side of the coin—academic disengagement—has received scant attention. This study aims to examine the relationships among students’ background variables, academic disengagement, self-reported learning abilities, and GPA, using structural equation modeling in the Student Experience in the Research University survey.
Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses yielded four disengagement factors. These factors are Interactive Disengagement, Alternative Commitment, Motivational Disengagement, and Behavioral Disengagement. Three factors self-reported learning abilities were extracted: Knowledge and Comprehension Skills, Research Skills, and Communication Skills. The effects of each of these disengagement factors on the learning abilities and on cumulative GPA, with students’ background variables controlled, was examined using structural equation modeling.
