What Works in Coaching: Supporting Teachers in Their Use of the Common Core State Standards

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Grand Ballroom L

Abstract

With states’ adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), school systems across the U.S. are looking for effective ways to equip teachers with the knowledge and instructional skills needed to implement the standards. Researchers have demonstrated that instructional coaching is a mode of professional development that increases teacher effectiveness. This inquiry is a qualitative multi-case study of 22 coach-teacher relationships, working in four model schools implementing the CCSS. This study finds that there are six constructs that indicate a strong coach relationship (e.g., trust, adaptability, content focused and such)and several factors that influence each of those constructs.
